Don’t Let Saggy Airbags Leave You Feeling Deflated – The Adjustable Airbag Delete Kit from Ironman 4x4 Is Here

Feb 15, 2021

If you are fortunate enough to own a totally sweet Toyota 4Runner or Lexus GX460 / GX470, one of the premium options these Prado’s came with was the rear Adjustable Height Control (AHC) air suspension. Pretty cool tech at the time, but not without its limitations. The AHC system uses airbags for the rear suspension in place of coil springs.

The Low Road

If you never plan to go off-road with your rig, then AHC is really only good for two things:

You can use it to lower the back of your truck so grandma can load the groceries when you pick her up from Whole Foods. Or, you can slow roll up to the local “Sittin-Sidewaze” lowrider street-bouncin’ event in the Harbor Freight parking lot, windows down yelling, “Yo, I’m gonna win it all with my hydraulicizing, street bouncin’, virtual possum hop’n, power lift’n, no curb boppin’, switch hitt’n, break dippin’ machine, Son!” You quickly realize you’ve made a bad life choice when a group of cool dudes start heading your way. You “hit the switches” to calm the crowd, but your old worn-out air bags just won’t fill. You drive away with your head hung low, a stuck AHC switch, and the sound of an on-board compressor motor burning up. That’s when you realize your GX wasn’t made for parking lot pushups and decide to make a change in your life. The truck wants to run free in the wild and play in the dirt!

So, while AHC is novel when new and functioning properly, it’s also a nightmare when it breaks and the OEM airbags are extremely expensive. So much so, you can buy an entirely new Ironman4x4 performance suspension kit with the Ironman4x4 Adjustable Airbag Delete kit for less money than the cost of two new OEM replacement air bags!

No joke – Google it! We did, and they’re $760 each! “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills” – Mugatu, Fashion Mogul and Lexus LFA Leasee

Fork In The Road:

“So, what else is out there?", you ask. In our opinion? Nothing worthwhile. Check out our price and consider all the features and benefits Ironman4x4 gives you. Is there anything else out there that can do what this kit does, and at this price?

Want to look around? Go ahead, we’ll wait...

We’ve looked around, too, and the only thing you’ll find out there are un-adjustable lifeless hollow steel pucks, frozen to a cold, dark and stormy axle, strangled by a pair of 80’s Volkswagen polyurethane coil isolators (seriously, just Google it!) squished and struggling to hang on for dear life, ready to blow at any minute!

The High Road:

Adjustable Airbag Delete

The Ironman4x4 Air Bag Delete kit isn’t just big on value. Ironman4x4’s engineering team didn’t just improve on the outdated, everyday spacer puck stuff. No, our team of engineering super studs developed and an entirely new solution that uses less ware-able parts, made it tougher than a T-1000 Terminator, and the kit is fully adjustable!

You might be asking yourself, “What the heck is going on around here?” Our engineers could have worked at NASA but they turned it down because they refused to change the name to Iron-NASA 4x4, plus Darran is scared of aliens...

The Ironman4x4 Adjustable Air Bag Delete Kit is super easy to install, comes with clear and easy to follow instructions, is bolt-on and requires no welding, cutting, or modifying any OEM parts on your vehicle. This means, if you ever want to remove it and put the stock parts back on, well, no problem Kemosabe.

The kit's custom, drop-forged aluminum spring seats were made to cradle the coil in perfect position to soothe away any annoying squeaks and creaks. Happy as a chubby baby in a muddy diaper. (Crawling babies are technically 4x4 too)

The threaded body of the steel EDP-coated base bolts securely into place on top of the rear axel. Once secured, just spin the drop-forged aluminum spring seat down onto the threaded base and set it to your desired ride height. These allow for a little over 1-inch of adjustment. Also, don’t forget, these adjustable spring seats are great for eliminating the dreaded “Left Hand Lean” that plagues USDM vehicles.

Come on Eileen

What's all this “Left Hand Lean” about? Because the driver sits on the righthand side in Japan, the OEM thought putting the fuel tank on the lefthand side would better balance the truck. But, they didn’t want to re-design the entire chassis for the U.S. market (where we sit on the same side as the fuel tank) so we end up with some lean to the left.

Basically, all these trucks sit about a half-inch lower on the left side. You can dial it out in the front with adjustable coil-overs like our Ironman4x4 Foam Cell Pro struts, but not so in the rear.

“So, you’re telling me you can’t adjust the rear suspension and get it perfect?”

I’m getting there, “Just easing the tension, Baby.” – Chubbs Peterson, Golf Pro and 6X Baja 1,000 Champion

This is why having an adjustable rear suspension solution is such a big deal. Until now, coil spacers could get you close, but now you can dial it in perfectly with the Ironman 4x4 Adjustable Airbag Delete Kit.

Hit The Pits

Once you have the spring seats installed, lock down the provided set screw so they don’t accidentally get bumped out of position, then install the coils. Don’t forget to put your cone isolator bump stops (AKA “Naughty Cones”) in, you’ll need them if you’re planning on flexing it out like Teddy Bro-sevelt.

That’s just a quick run-down of how they work, but, don't worry–we've also provided a complete set of installation  instructions for you or your favorite mechanic to reference. “Much contemplation I sense in you. Instructions, use you will.” – Yoda the Off-Roada', Jedi Master and FJ40 Owner
